SMA Europe

 9th Nov 2005

The Jennifer Trust is very pleased  to announce that on Saturday 5th November National SMA Organisation leaders from Europe met in Barcelona to agree the Constitution for a European wide organisation dedicated to Spinal Muscular Atrophy. For many years there have been informal meetings and collaborative working between many of the European SMA organisations but until now no formal organisation. Following agreement of the Constitution elections were held and we are delighted and very proud to announce that our Chief Executive Anita Macaulay was elected first ever President of SMA Europe!

Anita said "I have been working for many years to encourage European collaboration and partnership working and was pleased to play a leading part in writing the constitution. To then be elected the first President is indeed an honour. I am really thrilled and will work hard to ensure that we work hard to encourage co-operation across Europe not only with the SMA organisations but also clinicians and researchers. We must now encourage SMA organisations in other European countries to join us and for groups to be formed in countries where as yet there is no SMA organisation."

Founding countries are Spain, Holland, Germany, Italy, France and United Kingdom. Other Board  appointments are:

  • Domenico Marchetti - Italy - Vice president
  • Peter Streng, Holland - Secretary
  • Monica Breitman - Spain - Treasurer
