We are delighted to announce that this year, the Wellesbourne & District and Shakespeare Lions have chosen The Jennifer Trust to benefit from their annual River Avon Raft Race.
The Race will be held on Sunday 2nd September on a six-mile stretch of the beautiful and historic River Avon between Wasperton and Stratford.
This year will be the 30th time the event has been held. Over the years, the race has raised over half a million pounds for worthy causes, and regularly attracts teams from all across the UK who design and build their own rafts from scratch before taking to the water!
The Raft Race will be a landmark event in the Jennifer Trust's calendar, and is sure to provide huge entertainment for rafters and spectators alike, as well as raising significant funds for the Trust.
Community Fundraiser Allison Pratt said: 'We're really excited about being involved in the raft race this year, and we are very grateful to the Wellesbourne & District and Shakespeare Lions for choosing to support our vital work."
One of the most popular ways to compete is hold a 'race within the race' contest, where pubs, clubs, and local business vie for supremacy in their homemade rafts. For the winners there is glory, for the losers, an unexpected dip in the Avon!
Novelty rafts are also certain to provide entertainment. Previous entrants have styled their rafts to the themes of The Magic Roundabout, Finding Nemo, and Aladdin, and prizes are offered for the best costumed fancy-dress teams.
Underneath it all, however, is a serious and highly organised event. Over 60 volunteers provide a safety, first-aid, and radio communications network, with a Public address commentary running throughout the day. All entrants are electronically timed and the results are produced in real time on a computer controlled race system.
