Jemmas Story

Jemma wrote to us to tell us about her difficulties going on holiday abroad. Can you help her to find a solution? Perhaps you know of a charity or organisation that may be able to assist. PLEASE let us know, contact the office on 01789267520 or e-mail

I am 27 years old and have Spinal Muscular Atrophy, type 3. I am unable to walk more than a few steps, and so rely on my electric wheelchair to get around. At home I live with a 24 hour live in carer who helps me live independently with everything from cooking and cleaning to assisting me with my personal care.

I love to travel, but my disability is obviously a huge consideration. When I go on holiday, the first aspect that needs to be considered is access- I cannot go anywhere unless it is 100% wheelchair accessible- and that means the hotel room (including the bathroom), the hotel itself, and the surrounding area. If I were to go abroad then my special requirements (especially using an aeroplane), have to be arranged months in advance- which means no last minute deals…and consequently my holidays are usually expensive- and also limited.

There are holidays, in my opinion, which are much more accessible to wheelchair users than others-America (in particular Florida) and cruising (especially from the UK to avoid flights)- both of which I have been fortunate enough to experience.

I am lucky enough to have been on holiday many times with wonderful parents to many places including Florida, Las Vegas, Tenerife, France and many cruises to name a few. Unfortunately, almost two years ago my dad passed away very suddenly, and because my Mum has her own health issues, she cannot help me physically on her own, and so I have been unable to travel in the last two years. Although I work full time as a maths teacher- and I could afford to go on holiday, I can’t afford to pay for the 2 carers that I would need to come on holiday with me abroad. I feel that it is very unfair as most people can save and go on holiday when they want, but for me, and probably many other disabled people out there, we have to endure the extra costs of 1 or 2 additional people to help.

Any ideas about where to find funding or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
