Research News

New research from two independent laboratories suggests that there is likely to be a decisive period, probably while we are still in our mother’s womb, in which there needs to be a certain amount of SMN protein to stop SMA from developing.

The Jennifer Trust has had a longstanding relationship with the American organisation Families of SMA (FSMA), and has sent representatives to their annual international conference for several years. This year, the conference was held in Disney World, FL, USA, and Claire and Maggie, two of our outreach workers, attended on our behalf.

SMA Europe is pleased to announce its 4th International Call for SMA Research Projects. This new call for projects will be open to any research project aimed at finding a cure or therapy for SMA.

A phase 2 clinical trial is now open for recruitment of patients in several European countries, including the UK, with the objective to assess efficacy and the safety of olesoxime in patients with SMA Type 2 and Type 3. This trial concerns non-ambulant patients from 3 to 25 years and other inclusion and exclusion criteria apply. All three sites in the UK (Birmingham, London and Newcastle) are now open and recruitment has started. Birmingham and London are recruiting children only (3 to18 years old), while Newcastle is recruiting children and adults (3 to 25 years old). Newcastle has more spaces left than Birmingham and London.
