Has anyone noticed the effect of salt in their diet with reference to lung mucus viscosity and dryness? I always used a lot of salt on my food but now if I do is I immediately experience a scratching sort of cough and my mucus over the next few days becomes much thicker and drier, making life very difficult and scary. Thanks!

Has anyone practical personal experience of increasing their intake of vitamin B12 and folic acid? And, by which method -- tablets and/or injection? How much is enough? I have had a year of repeated strength loss periods and recently became so weak that I've lost many of the daily routine abilities (brushing teeth, shaving, even swallowing is now a serious problem). I don't know my diagnosis exactly; I'm 60 years, male, South African. Thanks!

I've never being formally tested for diagnosis but every doctor & specialist has agreed that I have some form of SMA. I'm 60 years old now and becoming increasingly severely weak, particularly in the last decade and the past couple of years. Even writing is now difficult. My question is about the incredibly thick and sticky mucus my lungs produce. Maybe the expression is a consequence of my weakness and has nothing to do with any condition. Can anyone provide information and/or their own experiences? Thanks.

My wife has SMA type III or IV, and at 53 has a good deal of back trouble and leg/feet trouble, as well as some weakness in the arms and hands. She is concerned that recently she has found herself unable to speak in mid-sentence, before drawing breath and being able to carry on. She doesn't know if this is to do with SMA or how it might develop if it is. Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm a 53 year old woman with type IV (adult onset) SMA. I am still able to walk short distances using a wheeled walker, but following a virus, I usually get a very dramatic weakening of my legs such that I can't move them at all. The doctors just chalk this up to systemic effects, but it is very frightening in all sorts of ways. Is this something others have had? If so, are there ways to lessen or prevent the worst effects? Thanks. Janet |
