I'm an auntie of a 3 and a half year old girl, diagnosed with Type 3 SMA last April. Her parents are in the process of choosing a school and have a dilemma. Do they opt for a larger, lively school with experience of supporting a child with mobility problems or do they opt for a much smaller village school where more individual attention could be given. In both situations extra support will have to be considered especially on a busy playground or going to and from the classroom. Does anyone have experience of a similar child (she has no siblings) in a bigger school? On the one hand her parents do not want to isolate her from other children and want her to have as much mainstream experience as possible and maybe the step to secondary school won't be as traumatic. The risk is maybe that she would find a large school overwhelming from a physical point of view. A village school may, however, help her gain confidence in her abilities before making the next step. Any feedback would be gratefully received. |

I have recently began a project which should prove there is currently a lack of hoist provision in accessible hotel rooms because there are no rules that state this as a reasonable adjustment. Our aim is to provide the facts and figures to persuade the hotel industry and other accommodation providers (e.g. conference centres) to install hoists as standard in their accessible rooms.
It would be helpful if I could be informed if you are interested in the project.

| I would like to hear off anyone with SMA, their experiences of visiting the dentist / accessing oral health services, good or bad, how well they cope with access, positioning comfort etc. |

It is not so much of question but access to sport for those with severe disabilities can be difficult. There is one sport that I have found that suits people with SMA, of all ages... A friend introduced me to it and I had a go for the first time this year - Trail Orienteering. Go have a browse through the site because it is a great way to get out into the countryside but above all you are using your brain power. The only downside is there are not many competitions in this country per year, there are however permanent sites in various parts of the country. If you are involved in Duke of Edinburgh Awards or Scouts etc then this is a great opportunity. It is also suited to families wanting a day out. If you require further information then please email me. See you out there - Vivien |

| I have adult onset and have never been able to drive. I am now taking driving lessons and really looking forward to getting out of my house on to the open road, though am concerned with my arms as they get tired so quickly, i will be learning in an automatic and have been told if my legs are not up to it i can use hand controls so can anyone tell me if this works well with tired arms too? |
