Current Question speaking problems
My wife has SMA type III or IV, and at 53 has a good deal of back trouble and leg/feet trouble, as well as some weakness in the arms and hands. She is concerned that recently she has found herself unable to speak in mid-sentence, before drawing breath and being able to carry on. She doesn't know if this is to do with SMA or how it might develop if it is. Does anyone know anything about this?

I suffer from SMA type IV and suffer occasionally from what you describe. I think it is related to the disease, but it has not got worse over the time I have experienced it - I started with SMA nearly 10 years ago. I experience 'weakness' all over the place, not just in legs and arms and I think this might be related to other muscles trying to compensate - such as chest and abdomen.
