Current Question Children
I have a son of 20 months with SMA II. My husband and I had always planned on having more children but now are unsure. Has anyone used IVF to become pregnant and ensure their next child doesnt have SMA? Are we underestimating the difficulties with having another child?

Hi Jeanette

I have recently added an article on PGD to the JTSMA web site which may well be of interest to you. You can find it in the Medical Information section under SMA Information.

It gives you another choice in your route to becoming pregnant again and I wish you the best of luck.

Hi Jeanette

We are in touch with a number of families who have gone on to have further children after having a child diagnosed with SMA. We are also in touch with families who have chosen not to have further children.
There are no right or wrong answers.

I would suggest that you find out about all the options open to you and then decide what is right for you.

Also you don't have to rush into a decision and you may change your mind over the months.

We are here to help whatever you decide so do contact us if you think that would help.

Hi
My eldest son is 3 years old and has sma type 2. But he was only 3 months old when i fell pregnant with my second child and it wasnt until he was 18 months old that he was diagnosed. Fortunately my second is unaffected. At the beggining of the year i fell pregnant, unexpectedly, with my third and so as it was unplanned we didnt go through any ivf or anything. I had a cvs test done at 12 weeks and she too is unaffected. She is now 1 month old. Basically just remember its a one in four chance in each pregnancy. I hope all goes well for you.
Susan

This may be a bit of a late reply but hopefully will be of some use. Our daughter Kate is now 8 and a half and has type 2. At first we both decided after Kate was diagnosed that we did not want anymore children as we were both scared and also unsure if we could cope. After 3 years we decided that we did want more children so approached our genetics dept here to check if we really did pass SMA on to Kate, as we had heard about genetic anomalies. But were told that we definitely had passed it on. We were then told about PGD and were unsure at first if it was for us. We decided that it was and were sent to Guys and St Thomas's in London. We had one go at PGD and it was successful and we now have 3 year old twin girls. PGD isnt for everyone but both my husband and I feel that it was the best we could do so we could still give Kate as much attention and help as possible. She also has 2 more little helpers who also adore her.
