Current Question Front Door Openers
Has anyone had something fitted to their front door which automatically opens / closes it, but maintains security? My son, who is almost 15 is frustrated that he can't leave or come home with out someone having to open the door whilst all his mates have keys to their homes.

Help! Caroline

Hi. I'm Chris. Type 2/3 sma. When I moved into my first flat in 1994 I had a company called Ridley Electronics come and fit an automatic door opener to my front door. In those days it cost about £1500-2000 per door and involved an electronic lock release and a radio frequency remote control that operated the lock and a hydrolic arm to push the door open. It was totally secure and very easy to use. They also did curtain openers, window openers, all which operate from the same one button remote. Unfortunately I no longer have any phone numbers or details for them but I'm sure a Google search for the name Ridley will find them if they're still about. Now, I have a piece of string (very high tech!) that I loop around my hand which pull the door handle down and opens the door. Then a piece of string on the outside enables me to shut the door behind me. This new system is not ideal as I can't let myself back into my house without help. But, it is alot cheaper.
I hope you find something suitable as these small details give a great reward when it comes to self confidence and a feeling of freedom.

Good luck.

Hi,
We recently had a very (cheap) door opening system fitted called LOCCA. It was paid for by Social Services and it is working really very well. You can also purchase it privately from places like Homebase etc. It works using a fob.
To-date it had been 99.9% safe. the only time it failed was in the recent high winds (sw scotland) too ensure total security at nights and when we are away from home we use another lock that requires a key.
Let me know if you require any further info.
regards Vivien
