Current Question sma type 1
early this year we had our fourth baby max in june of this year but he died when he was 10 days old.we didnt now till after he had died that he had sma type1 and we were both carriers we then fell pregnant 6 weeks after he had died but sadly miscarried that baby which also had sma type 1. i dont understand how you can have three perfectly healthy children then have two babys with sma.is there any thing that were doing wrong?

Hello Leanne, sorry to hear you miscarried so soon after you lost your little man. You are doing nothing wrong. SMA is a recessive disorder, which means that in every pregnancy there is a 3 out of 4 chance of the baby being unaffected, with only a 1 out of 4 chance of it being affected. I lost my oldest daughter to SMA at 7 ms, my 2nd pregnancy was also affected (we ended the pregnacy we felt we could not love and lose another baby) plus a misscarriage before testing. However I have gone on to have 2 healthy babies. Any of the parents on this board could have had unaffected children and never realised that they are carriers. Take care, love Carol
