Carrier testing? |
Hi,
I am begining to think about starting my own family and have a sibling with SMA, so have a 50/50 chance of being a carrier. Does anyone know of how I might get tested?
Many thanks for all you help.

You should be able to get some form of counselling from the local hospital. If your sibling is under a specific doctor you could find out from them where to be referred and ask if you can have a blood test. My sister had a test done as we have a daughter with SMA and she was concerned that she may carry the gene. Hope this helps. Tina |

Re: Re: Carrier testing? |
Hi,
I have only just this week phoned my genetic counsellor, who I had contacted about my brother being tested. I am a carrier and she told me it gave my brother a 50% chance of being a carrier too, And his very first port of call was to contact his gp, explaining the situation, that he would like children etc.. and he will then refer you to a genetics department nearest to you. The genetics department may need to contact the family directly involved to be able to analsye the results of the blood test. I hope that helps any... Good luck, lucy x If you want any more help please email me, x |

Re: Carrier testing? |
hi, my mother in law has been trying for a while to find out her carrier status, you would of thought it was as simple as taking a blood sample and then testing it wouldn't you? both my husband and i are carriers and had a son with the condition, she wants to find out for the sake of the other children and grandchildren, but my husband has just had to sign a form to say they can open up the files of our son's diagnosis, to be able to pass on the info, i have absolutely no idea why this might be, it's just what has had to happen. good luck. |
