Current Question Travel Insurance
Has anyone been able too get travel insurance including health that does cover you having SMA type 3?

I can get a policy but it excludes any illness that can be related to SMA e.g. chest infections.

Obviously I do not anticipate getting ill but I also have too be realistic (52 days of travel) but do I take the risk of travelling on a wing and a prayer hoping that I do not get sick with anything that is remotely linked to SMA...

This is a crazy and frustrating world we live in.

Any help appreciated.

Hi, I took my son who had type 1 to the Maldives in 2002 and he had full insurance so can only imagine the same company would be able to help you. The number I have in my diary is 02392419000 9I checked it still works); I think they might be called the medical line but it is all a bit of a haze! Good luck and have a great trip! Emma

Thank you Emma for your advice, I tried a number of insurance companies that said they catered for disability etc but they ran; one company said they could quote me for £750 WOW!

So I politely said no thanks butthen a friend then mentioned trying AGE CONCERN and they have come up trumps with a quote of £107 for the whole trip.

they have 4 main questions and if you ansewr no to them then you can get full cover. I was still hesitant so telephoned their medical helpline because I thought this was far too easy. However, I was pleasantly surprised too be told that SMA was not considered life threatening and therefore I should not worry.

So, I recommend Age Concern as a first stop for anyone thinking of travelling as they are so helpful when you talk to them - a human insurance company.

My son age 10 has SMA I/II and every year when we have been to spain I have insured with TESCO. They send you separate details and specifically list Spinal Muscular Atrophy on documentation. Lapland /USA /France have all been visited with TESCO insurance.
