Powered wheelchairs |
Hi, I'm mum to sam who is four and has SMA type II. He is currently waiting for his NHS powered wheelchair to be completed but I want to get him his own chair with "features" can anyone tell me which kind they have and the pro's and cons please. Any advice would be welcome. |

Re: Powered wheelchairs |
| Hi my son is type II and is also 4 - we bought the Permobil Koala and have only praise for it. Its small so we use it indoors as well as out, the seat go' up and down so he can sit at a small table and dining table plus press the button for the green man (a little thing but important) theres also a tilting motion so when he gets tired he can "rest" or when driving down a slope can ease into it. He was fitted for the seat and it looks so cool his friends all want one! Highly recommend. |

Re: Powered wheelchairs |
Hi Sue The best features have to be the up/down mechanism which is incredibly useful for different height tables in school and also for socialising. I only know of one chair, the Dragon that goes down to the floor but this is a great feature when they are young especially for story time in school when all his classmates will be sitting on the floor although they seem to grow out of this feature. I would also recommend a tilt mechanism because otherwise they are sat in the same position all day, just being able to tilt back and rest back and head and relieve pressure is a big bonus. Also if you have a typical boy make sure its got decent tyres that will take a bit of action, he will want to be out playing with his friends and getting punctures all the time is a real pain. Chairs like the Permobil range and some of the Spectra range are great outdoor chairs that can take a bit of bumpy ground! |
