Re: Swimming, sports, activities |
Hi Jeanette. My son (22 months) is SMA II too. We try the hippotherapy - riding on the horseback. Our doctor recomended it to exercise back muscles. One lesson takes about 20 minutes, till Vojtik isn't tired. He loves it very much. |

my son is nearly 4 and he also goes horse riding, we do this through Riding for the Disabled Association. It is a voluntary organisation and it is free. We live in kent but i'm sure this happens all over.

Re: Swimming, sports, activities |
| My son is three and a half and goes horse riding. He also does it through the riding for the disabled in the Scottish Borders. heloves it and since starting his upper body strength has improved a lot. I also take him to the swimming pool regularly and this gives him the opportunity to do lots of kicking and splashing while the water takes care of weight bearing. |

Re: Swimming, sports, activities |
There is an activity which we as a family have just experienced and hope to continue, which is ice skating! Our local ice rink in Swindon allows electric wheelchairs on the ice and provides a ramp if necessary. There was no stopping our Ben(nearly 5 with severe type II) once he got out there! It doesn't help him with weight bearing or anything but boy, did he enjoy it! It was great for me too as a non-ice skater - I just held on to the back of his chair and he dragged me round. Brilliant! Re: Re: Re: Swimming, sports, activities |
Hi Jean, Yes, the chair did go straight onto the ice. He needed a ramp to get off again but once he was on it was just like being on a normal, hard smooth surface. The tyres managed to grip onto the ice somehow and he just drove as normal. Stopping wasn't a problem either. His hands got cold after a while (quite a long while!) so I must see what I can do about getting him some gloves thin enough for him to still be able to drive his chair but keep his hands warm.

Re: Swimming, sports, activities |
Hi there are some great sports out there for children and adults with SMA to do; swimming is the obvious one because there is always one nearby BUT I would suggest thinking about having a look at Disability Sport England or Scottish Disabilty Sports (websites.
From my experience your son could participate in anything he desired trying out. However, powered wheelchair football is an up an coming sport; boccia/lawn bowls; swimming; trail orienteering; polybat or even have a look at Riding for the Disabled.
Something that I have had the opportunity to do is Curling on ice. Basically I have a piece of pipe that goes on my footplate and then using a cue and the power of my wheelchair I can just about manage to get the stone down the ice. When you get to the hogline I stop my chair and off the stone goes... I might not be good at it but it is great fun!
At the end of the day do not be inhibited at the fear of it not working out or failing because not succeeding having tried a sport out you can look back and say, 'we did have a go.'
Go and have fun out there... |

Re: Swimming, sports, activities |
| Hi I want to buy a neck float for my son. So far all I've seen are rather large and yellow, I was given the name for a catalogue which had nice clear ones for children - does anyone know the one I am referring too and if so could they post the name of the company thanx |
