Salt in the diet. |
| Has anyone noticed the effect of salt in their diet with reference to lung mucus viscosity and dryness? I always used a lot of salt on my food but now if I do is I immediately experience a scratching sort of cough and my mucus over the next few days becomes much thicker and drier, making life very difficult and scary. Thanks! |

Re: Salt in the diet. |
| Hi I used to be never affect by salt intake, but now I add no salt to food at all, there is enough in processed food! I do find now that I get a very dry mouth and throat if I eat such things as crisps and similar snacks, but I thought that was just old age catching up or a loss of tolerance. I do not know of any accepted relationship between SMA and salt intake. But if SMA is caused by a virus, is it possible that the metabolism is altered during such an attack? This could affect the way the body copes with things like salt. I had a kidney stone soon after the symptoms of SMA started - large enough to be surgically removed - and, although no doctor would suggest a link, I have always felt that there could have been a change in the way my body dealt with calcium as a result of a virus which might have precipitated my SMA. All I can say is drink a lot of water and take little salt. Best Wishes, Peter H. |

Re: Re: Salt in the diet. |
| Dear Peter -- Thanks for your reply. I haven't thought about connections between virus attacks and SMA before. I came across the salt issue through personal experience and the biological mechanisms of cystic fibrosis which has symptoms, lunched others, of thick intractable mucus. Thanks again. Bernie. |

Re: Salt in the diet. |
| I think this is a potential concern. It is very hard to control the amount of salt in your diet unless you cook everything yourself, which in this modern world is quite hard to do. I have made an effort to reduce salt intake as there is a national issue with high blood pressure. |
