Viscose mucus. |
| I've never being formally tested for diagnosis but every doctor & specialist has agreed that I have some form of SMA. I'm 60 years old now and becoming increasingly severely weak, particularly in the last decade and the past couple of years. Even writing is now difficult. My question is about the incredibly thick and sticky mucus my lungs produce. Maybe the expression is a consequence of my weakness and has nothing to do with any condition. Can anyone provide information and/or their own experiences? Thanks. |

Re: Viscose mucus. |
Hi
I am 53 and suffer from SMA Type IV and have never really experienced what you describe. I have experience asthma type mucus, but I think that is due to my asthma! If your chest muscles are not affected then they would function normally surely. Do you do any upper body excercises, they might help? I try to keep moving and doing because I know I feel rough if I just become sedentary. Are you sure its not an infection or something else?

Re: Re: Viscose mucus. |
| Dear Peter -- Thanks for responding. My chest muscles are indeed affected, as is all parts of my body in the typical SMA voluntary muscle weakness. In addition I have significant scoliosis of the spine. Regarding the infection issue; I've just had a short course of Zithromax and am far this clogged but the mucus itself is still very thick, dry and sticky. I've never gone for a rigorous diagnosis because thinking that a muscle biopsy isn't worth knowing. Bernie. |

| I think its's to do with shallow breathing. If you take some time in your day to do excercises, breathe deeply in through the nose and out through your mouth, about 10 times morning/evening for a couple of ddays, see if it helps expand your lungs. |
