SMA CARNI-VAL Clinical Trial

 3rd May 2006

We have received the following news from our friends Families of SMA in the USA. Please note that this is USA Only trial and that UK families and research centres are NOT involved:

Dear Friends,
We have exciting news to report. Every study site is actively screening and enrolling study candidates for SMA CARNI-VAL.

As many of you know, SMA CARNI-VAL is a phase II clinical trial to further evaluate a combined regimen of valproic acid and carnitine in children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Dr. Kathryn Swoboda, associate professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and principal investigator for Project Cure SMA, is leading the effort. Additional sites include Children's Hospital of Michigan, Saint Justine Hospital in Quebec, John Hopkins University, Ohio State University and University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital.

The goal is to complete enrollement at all sites by the end of the summer. We will have an update on the progess at the FSMA Family Conference in San Diego in July.
