Edward Scissorhands Day Report

 23rd Jan 2009

The Edward Scissorhands Day was attended by 15 young people with SMA and their friends, brothers and sisters on Sunday 4th January 2009. It began with a dance/movement workshop given by two dancers of the New Adventure Theatre Company Vicky and Phil who were also in the Edward Scissorhands show later in the day.

The group was split in to 3 or 4 to create a family. Each member had to choose a personality and name to match. During the workshop the character was developed to include mannerisms, actions and facial expressions. One group were Mr Bossy, Mrs Tilly (timid) Bossy and their children. They then had to imagine what sort of car they would drive around in. Would it be a big shiny Bentley or an old, difficult to start banger? The family had to sit in their car and go on an outing.....very funny to see the groups go around the room pretending to turn the wheel, open either electric or manual windows and have collisions! This was done to the music from the show and was recreated on stage later for us all to see.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and gained so much from it......

Being able to do the workshop even though I'm in a wheelchair.

It was fun and the people who took it were very nice.

Fun and informative. Enjoyable. Fantastic and funny.

Wendy, Kirstie and Naomi were volunteers in the workshop - Thank you!

Then it was time for a well deserved lunch. We were joined by the young peoples' parents and carers to see the Show. The theatre removed two rows of seats so we could all sit together. We had a wonderful central view of the Show, which was magical. When we saw Vicky and Phil on stage they did special actions just for us - Vicky did a little shimmy and Phil pulled at his swim trunks....we all cheered when this happened. At the end it snowed! Lots and lots of it poured down....someone at the front put up an umbrella when this happened!

After the show, all the actors came to us to answer our questions. Also for a memento they signed copies of the programme for everyone to keep. Then we went backstage to see all the props and got to go on the stage!

This day was memorable for lots of reasons, how everyone joined in during the workshop and used their creative abilities, the wonderful Edward Scissorhands show, meeting the actors and having fun.

More quotes from the young people........

The day was really good - kind of a little insight into a whole new world.

It was fantastic! Really interesting and exciting.

It allowed me to feel part of the show and to learn more about it and the cast.

What did you like?

How the actors transformed into characters.

Everything! Especially seeing backstage.

Meeting the cast, watching the show, The realistic ending to the storyline.

Thank you to Sarah Howard who organised this day for the young people of the Jennifer Trust and New Adventures Theatre Company who gave their time and energy. Also thank you to the Sadler's Wells Theatre Company who generously gave this opportunity to our group to experience the world of theatre!
