A campaigning Darlington couple, who raise money in memory of their baby son, have received a donation to their chosen charity from their local building society.
Staff at the Tubwell Row branch of Darlington Building Society were moved by the courage of John and Tracey Chad, who lost their son Matthew to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Type 1). Matthew died in 2004 shortly after being diagnosed at 11 weeks old.
Since his death, the couple have worked tirelessly to raise money in his memory.
The building society handed over a £50 cheque to the couple and a golfing umbrella to be raffled to raise more funds.
Susan Coatsworth, of Darlington Building Society, said: “John and Tracey are well known in Darlington and all our staff have great respect for their courage in trying to help other children and families.
“The work they do is amazing and we wanted to support them in this worthy cause. We always try to look after local interests in many different ways including making charitable donations towards good causes.”
The couple will pass on the money to the Jennifer Trust for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a charity based in Stratford Upon Avon, which offers confidential information, emotional support, practical advice and guidance to anyone affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy who is living in the UK.
Tracey said: “We are very grateful for the kind donation from Darlington Building Society. We will pass it on immediately and aim to raise as much as possible too from the raffle of the golf umbrella.
“Since losing Matthew, to keep us sane, we’ve raised funds each year. The money we raise for the Jennifer Trust goes into Matthew’s Angel Fund, which is a fund that the Jennifer Trust uses however they feel necessary.
“Each year, we also hold a raffle and the proceeds from that are split equally between the Butterwick House Children's Hospice in Stockton and the Jennifer Trust. The golf umbrella will be a very good raffle prize. Support from local people and business is vital for us and we now class Darlington Building Society as our friends.”
