The Jennifer Trust Conference 2009 provided an eager audience with much food for thought. We are really fortunate to have the support and interest of such engaging speakers, who can put over complex and sometimes challenging issues in an accessible way. Three of the key presenters have given permission for their presentations to be included on the website
Professor Victor Dubowitz gave a fascinating retrospective look at the history of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and Dr Stephen Minger brought us up to date with the very latest work in stem cell research. In response to a question about the safety of stem cell treatments currently offered for example in China, the audience heard from one of the UK`s leading experts that such treatments may carry significant risks.
Dr Anna Mayhew gave a presentation on the new SMARTNet database, launched earlier this year, that has been set up to help clinicians and physiotherapists give accurate information to families about the progress of SMA to ensure the best care for patients.
