SMA Scientist Q & A Sessions

The stereotypical image of a scientist is often an old, bespectacled man with messy, white hair and lab coat, slaving away in his ivory tower, totally disconnected from the outside world.

In reality, it can be quite different.

To provide insight into scientists working on SMA in Europe, what they do and why, we will be conducting mini “interviews” with some leading SMA researchers.

We began the series with Tom Gillingwater, who works at the University of Edinburgh and has been conducting research on SMA for nearly five years.

Our second SMA scientist under the microscope was Kevin Talbot of the University of Oxford, who works both in the clinic and in the laboratory.

Our next SMA scientist, Martine Barkats from the Institut de Myologie (Paris, France), is one of the pioneers of using virus-mediated SMN protein delivery as a potential therapeutic for SMA.

For our fourth Q & A installment, we have a special guest from the U.S., Greg Cox, who works on Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress (SMARD).
