This year, the fifth UK SMA Researchers' Meeting is being organised by Sheffield University under the Chairmanship of Professor Mimoun Azzouz, Chair of Translational Neuroscience at the university's Medical School.

The meeting will be held at the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn, Victoria Station Road, Sheffield, S4 7YE on 12-13 November 2008.

The meeting is being jointly funded by the Jennifer Trust and the SMA Trust.

Attendance at the meeting is free of charge, although participants must book and pay for their own accommodation and travel.

A special overnight rate of £95 is being offered by the hotel for participants at the meeting. Call the hotel direct on 0114 276 882 and quote the UK SMA Meeting to obtain this rate.

Free participation includes lunch on both days and dinner on the evening of 12^th November.

All those wishing to attend the meeting, whether or not they are submitting an abstract, must register to attend by email with Professor Azzouz.

Call for Abstracts

• All abstracts must be submitted via email to Professor Mimoun Azzouz, Chair of Translational Neuroscience at Sheffield University Medical School.

• The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday 26 September

• Abstracts must not be more than 450 words long

• Abstracts must be presented using the format: Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Discussion/Conclusion.

• Authors may submit abstracts outlining ongoing work, but these must be labelled as 'Work in Progress'.

• Authors need to stipulate the preferred presentation format (oral presentation or poster)

• All abstracts (except work in progress) may be made available on the websites of the Jennifer Trust and the SMA Trust.

• Authors must provide telephone and email contact details to which all conference correspondence will be addressed.

Young Scientists' Award

The Jennifer Trust and the SMA Trust are delighted to announce that an award will be made to the best poster at the meeting prepared by a PhD student or Post Doc.

Eligible posters will be judged by a panel chaired by Professor Mimoun Azzouz.

The prize will be a bursary sufficient to enable the winner to attend the Families of SMA Research Conference in Cincinnati, USA, in June 2009. The bursary will cover travel and four nights' accommodation.
